Burma’s Black August

On August 8, 1988, the people of Burma rose up against the military rule that had oppressed them since 1962. Led by students, the uprising was brutally suppressed by the military government. This year marks the 20th anniversary of this crackdown, but it not just a historic date that is being remembered as this violent period two decades ago has ramifications for Burma’s people today. We need only to reflect on the Saffron Revolution led by Buddhist monks last year, the tardy and inept response to this May’s cyclone and the attempt by Burma’s generals to cling to power through a new Constitution they crafted.

It is in this context that the Hong Kong Coalition for a Free Burma has arranged for Nyo Ohn Myint of the ‘88 Generation to visit Hong Kong beginning on August 6. In addition to being a member of the ‘88 Generation of students who led the protests 20 years ago, he is also a member of Aung San Suu Kyi’s National League for Democracy (NLD) and a member of the Foreign Affairs Committee of the National Council of the Union of Burma (NCUB) that is based in exile in Thailand.

The various local activities that the coalition will hold for the upcoming week include the following:

FRIDAY AUGUST 1

4:30 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.: Photo exhibit and distribution of flyers near the Body Shop in Sai Yeung Choi Street South in Mongkok
SATURDAY AUGUST 2

4:30 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.: Photo exhibit and distribution of flyers near the Body Shop in Sai Yeung Choi Street South in Mongkok

SUNDAY AUGUST 3

3:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m.: Photo exhibit and distribution of flyers in Victoria Park

4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m.: Photo exhibit and distribution of flyers at the Shek Ku Lung Road Playground in Kowloon City

WEDNESDAY AUGUST 6

11:00 a.m.: Demonstration with Burmese activist Nyo Ohn Myint at the Burmese consulate, 24/F, Sun Hung Kai Centre, 30 Harbour Road, Wan Chai

A press conference with Nyo Ohn Myint will be held on the street outside the Sun Hung Kai Centre following the demonstration.

7:00 p.m.: Public forum with Nyo Ohn Myint at City University (to be confirmed)

THURSDAY AUGUST 7

7:00 p.m. : Photo exhibit and distribution of flyers at the Tsim Sha Tsui Star Ferry
